Edward Dwurnik (1943–2018)
Painter of urban landscapes and portraitist of contemporary Poland
Joanna Piotrowska - Art Advisor & Marszand
Edward Dwurnik was a Polish painter and graphic artist, known for his multi-element compositions focused on urban spaces, crowds, and social life. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he developed his individual style inspired by everyday life and Polish history.
He studied painting and graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1963 to 1970. He received his first decisive creative impulses from the works of Bernard Buffet and the Nikifor exhibition. He began to create painting cycles such as Hitchhiking Travels, Warsaw and Portrait.
His painting is characterized by multi-element compositions, often composed of numerous figures and details that create multi-dimensional images of cities and crowds. The works often have a deep social and critical charge towards contemporary times.
He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including the Solidarity Cultural Award (1983), the Paris Biennale Award (1985), the Seoul Art Olympics Award (1988), and the Contemporary Art Foundation Award (1992). In 2014, he received the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, and in 2015 the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis.
In 2018, he prepared the exhibition "75x75 Dwurnik" at the State Art Gallery in Sopot. He was a recognized contemporary artist with a huge number of works - over 5,000 paintings, which are in many museum and private collections.
