Amelia Cup “Girl in a Green Dress” – Tamara de Lempicka – Ćmielów Porcelain

One of Tamara Łempicka’s most recognizable paintings.

It depicts a modern and confident woman of the 1920s.

The model’s figure has been subjected to extensive styling. Her regular facial features and statuesque pose bring to mind ancient Greek sculptures. The form-fitting dress emphasizes every part of the woman’s body.

The artist created figures from solid blocks, which gives the illusion that they were carved from stone or cast from steel.

This painting could be titled “The Navel,” considering how far the artist went to glorify this fascinating anatomical detail, whose depth rivals that of an arum flower’s crown. The unbridled sensuality of this painting did not deter the Luxembourg Museum’s Purchasing Committee from acquiring it at the Salon des Indépendants in 1923.
