“Self-Portrait (in a Green Bugatti)” – Tamara de Lempicka

In its October 3, 1928 issue, the widely read weekly magazine Vu published a cover photo by Kertész depicting a young woman behind the wheel of a sports car. The caption indicated that the model’s sports outfit, gloves, and leather cap were all from Hermès. Tamara Łempicka wore exactly the same accessories in her self-portrait, which was obviously inspired by Kertész’s photograph.

The green Bugatti in the famous “Self-Portrait” was actually a Renault. What’s more, the car was yellow, according to her daughter’s recollections. Either way, Lempicka was irresistibly seductive behind the wheel, so much so that she caught the attention of the editor of one of Germany’s biggest fashion magazines, Die Dame. This fruitful encounter later gave Lempicka the opportunity to appear in the magazine, which significantly contributed to increasing the artist’s recognition (according to Passion by Design, The Art and Times of Tamara Lempicka).

A specially designed background image was placed on the porcelain cup Amelia. The graphic with the background was also placed on the porcelain saucer.
Underneath the cup and saucer, there is a description with the title of the work and the logo of the Tamara de Lempicka Foundation.

Each cup is handmade from the highest quality porcelain, and then a decal fired at high temperatures is applied to the product by hand. The product has special security features in the form of underglaze and overglaze marks.
