Jacek Malczewski (1854–1929) – one of the most outstanding Polish artists, painter and illustrator, known as the father of Polish Symbolist painting, co-founder of the Polish Artists’ Society “Sztuka” and member of the Zero group.
The album, compiled by Urszula Kozakowska-Zaucha, is devoted to the life and work of Jacek Malczewski, one of Poland’s most outstanding artists, painters, and illustrators, and a leading representative of the Young Poland movement.
Malczewski studied at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow under Jan Matejko, Władysław Łuszczkiewicz, and Feliks Szynalewski, then trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was a co-founder of the Polish Artists’ Society “Sztuka” and a long-time professor and two-time rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow.
In the early stages of his career, inspired by Romantic literature and art, he mainly created works on the themes of martyrdom and messianism. His later works, containing biblical, mythological, and fairy-tale motifs, are distinguished by their difficult-to-decipher symbolism. Malczewski’s paintings, characterized by their enigmatic nature and contrasts, reflect the artist’s own experiences as well as the social and artistic changes of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
This is an excellent choice for all lovers of Polish art.
