About the painting “Self-Portrait in a Green Bugatti”

In 1928, the cover of the prestigious weekly magazine Vu featured a photograph by André Kertész depicting a young woman in a sports car. The model’s styling—gloves, hat, and accessories from Hermès—became a direct inspiration for Tamara Łempicka, who recreated this image in her self-portrait.

Interestingly, the famous “Green Bugatti” from the painting was actually a yellow Renault, as mentioned by the artist’s daughter. Despite this difference, the work became an icon of female independence and seductive power, and the painting itself contributed to Lempicka’s popularity in Die Dam magazine.
