Orange and Yellow
Orange and Yellow' reflects Mark Rothko's mature style, where two or three softly colored rectangles float against a surrounding background that gently separates them. The edges of the rectangles are blurred, avoiding optical rupture and allowing the viewer's eyes to move calmly between the sections in a contemplative manner. Rothko concealed all traces of the creative process by applying many thin layers of paint on unprepared canvas, which absorbs the colors, giving the painting lightness and a sense of inner glow. The painting was considered relatively large in the 1950s, and the artist encouraged viewers to stand close to feel enveloped by the colors.
