Whaam!
Whaam! is a two-part painting based on a scene from the comic 'All-American Men of War,' published by DC Comics in February 1962. The left side depicts an American fighter plane firing a rocket that hits an enemy plane approaching on the right side of the painting. The bright yellow inscription 'WHAAM!' explodes from the exploding plane, illustrating the force of the impact. Lichtenstein used his characteristic comic book aesthetic, with bold black lines, uniform color fields, and Ben-Day dots, creating a work that combines mass image production with high art.
