About the painting “Girl in a Green Dress”

The painting depicts a modern, confident woman of the 1920s. Her regular facial features and statuesque silhouette are reminiscent of ancient Greek sculptures. The dress hugs her body, emphasizing every part of it and giving the figure a sensual character.

Lempicka constructed her heroines from geometric shapes, creating the impression that they were carved in stone or cast in steel. Critics even jokingly suggested that the painting could be titled “The Navel,” so strongly did the artist emphasize this anatomical detail.

However, the unbridled sensuality of the work did not prevent it from being recognized by the art world—in 1923, the Luxembourg Museum purchased the painting during the Salon des Indépendants, which significantly raised the artist’s prestige.
